Used Kawasaki Z650 and Z800: What to Look For and 2026 Prices
If you're looking for a used mid-range naked motorcycle, sooner or later you'll end up looking at a Kawasaki Z. The Z650 has been one of the best-selling motorcycles in Spain since 2017 — lightweight, reliable, and restrictable for an A2 licence — and its older sibling, the Z800, was a bestseller before giving way to the Z900. Both rotate extremely quickly in the used market. This guide tells you which one suits you and what to check before paying.
Z650 or Z800? It Depends on Your Licence
- Kawasaki Z650 (68 hp): as it is originally below 70 kW, it can be restricted to 35 kW for an A2 licence and then derestricted again when you obtain your A licence. It's THE typical purchase for a newly qualified rider: manageable, low seat height, and with a flexible twin-cylinder engine that forgives errors.
- Kawasaki Z800 (113 hp): exceeds 70 kW, so it cannot be restricted: it requires an A licence. In return, it offers a four-cylinder engine with character and the stability of a larger motorcycle, now available at a bargain price on the used market.
What to Look For Before Buying a Used Z
- 1. Signs of a fall. Many Z650s were first motorcycles: check lever ends, handlebar bar ends, engine covers, footpegs, and the gear lever. A scratch doesn't rule out the purchase, but it does lower the price.
- 2. Drive chain kit. Chain tensioned and lubricated, sprocket and chainring without sharp "pointed" teeth. A worn-out kit is worth €150-200 that you can negotiate.
- 3. Restriction documentation (Z650). If it's restricted for an A2 licence, ask for the restriction certificate and check that the technical inspection document is up to date. If you buy it to derestrict it later, that process also generates paperwork.
- 4. Up-to-date maintenance. Ask for the service book or invoices: oil and filters regularly, and, above all, that the valve clearance adjustment was done when due. This is the expensive service that many owners "forget" before selling.
- 5. Electrical system. On Kawasakis with age and mileage, it's advisable to check that the battery charges correctly (regulator/rectifier) and that there are no warning lights on. Start from cold: it should maintain a stable idle.
- 6. Brakes and tyres. Discs without a lip, pads with plenty of material, and tyres without cracks (check the DOT date, not just the tread).

Used Prices in 2026
Indicative prices based on year and mileage: a 2017-2020 Z650 with up-to-date maintenance ranges between €4,500 and €6,500; a Z800 (2013-2016) also ranges between €4,500 and €6,500, with the later, better-equipped versions at the higher end.
