Used Yamaha X-MAX 125: Buying Guide for Car Licence Holders

Used Yamaha X-MAX 125 at MotoDirecta

The Yamaha X-MAX 125 has been on the podium of Spain's best-selling scooters for years, and in the second-hand market, it's one of the most sought-after models available: it can be ridden with a car licence, it has the quality of a large scooter and withstands years of daily use without complaint. Precisely for this reason, you need to buy it carefully: many come from intensive urban use. We tell you what to check and how much to pay in 2026.

What licence do I need?

Being a 125cc (around 14 hp), you can ride it with an A1 licence or directly with your B car licence if you have held it for at least 3 years. This is the number one reason for its success: it's the natural step from four to two wheels without any tests.

Why the X-MAX and not another 125

  • GT Quality: windscreen, space for two helmets, ABS braking, and an overall feel of a higher-displacement scooter.
  • Blue Core Engine: real-world fuel consumption of around 3 l/100 km and simple, well-proven mechanics.
  • Resale Value: it's so in demand that it barely depreciates if you look after it — you buy it, use it for years, and resell it well.

What to look for before buying a used X-MAX 125

  • 1. Its history of use. It's the favourite city scooter… and also for delivery services. Be wary of very low mileage with heavily worn grips, seat, and footrests: our buying checklist tells you how to spot it.
  • 2. Variator and belt. Typical scooter maintenance. Ask for invoices for the last belt and roller replacement; if none exist, deduct it from the price. When riding, it should not jerk when accelerating from a standstill.
  • 3. Urban falls. Side plastics, mirrors, and wheel arch: scuffs from the stand or low-speed falls are normal, but should be reflected in the price.
  • 4. Smart Key. For recent generations, check that the keyless system works first time and ask if both keys are provided: a new copy is not cheap.
  • 5. Brakes, tyres, and battery. The usual consumables. Tyres without cracks, discs without a lip, and starts first time from cold.
  • 6. Documents. Valid ITV (vehicle inspection in Spain), technical data sheet (Spanish: ficha técnica), and ensure the seller is the registered owner. If it comes from a fleet or rental company, ask for the maintenance history.

How much does it cost in 2026

Indicative: a 2017-2020 X-MAX 125 in good condition is around €2,800-€4,200, and more recent units or those with low mileage exceed €4,500. At our dealership, the latest units have been delivered for around €4,300, inspected and with a 12-month warranty. Bargains significantly below market price often hide delivery use, dubious odometers, or non-existent maintenance.
