Can you really ride it with a car licence?

Yes, with caveats. The LT versions (those with a wider front track) are homologated as a motor tricycle (category L5e), and in Spain, tricycles can be ridden with a Category B car licence if you are over 21 years old. The non-LT versions, which are narrower, are homologated as motorcycles and require a Category A licence.

Therefore, if your situation is "I have a car licence and don't want to take any more tests", when buying a used MP3, the first thing you should check is that the unit is an LT: this is stated in the vehicle registration document and can usually also be read on the bodywork logos.

Which version suits you best

• MP3 300/350: the most agile and economical. Sufficient for city and short-distance travel; struggles a bit more on motorways with two people.
• MP3 400: the balance. A relaxed engine for motorway use, contained fuel consumption, and a very reasonable used price.
• MP3 500: the top of the range. For those who cover many miles daily or travel as a couple. It also retains its value best.

What to check before buying a used MP3

• 1. The front end. This is the jewel (and the most expensive part) of the MP3. With the motorcycle stationary, turn the handlebars fully to both sides and check for play or noises in the parallelogram. When riding, both wheels should make contact and work in parallel without vibrations.
• 2. The tilt-locking system (roll-lock). The system that keeps the motorcycle upright at traffic lights. Activate and deactivate it several times: it should engage with a firm click and only release when accelerating. Its repair is not cheap.
• 3. Twin front tyres. They should show even wear between them. If one wheel is much more worn than the other, suspect a geometry problem or an impact.
• 4. Drive belt and variator. Like any scooter, variator maintenance is key. Ask for invoices: the belt and rollers have a periodic replacement schedule, and a neglected variator will cause jerking when accelerating.
• 5. Brakes and weight. An MP3 weighs around 250-270 kg: the brakes work hard. Check the thickness of the discs and pads on all three wheels and ensure the parking brake holds well.
• 6. Electronics. On more recent hpe models, check the keyless ignition, the instrument panel, and that no ABS/ASR warning lights are illuminated.
• 7. Documentation. Vehicle registration document (confirm L5e homologation if you want to ride it with a Category B licence), up-to-date ITV (vehicle technical inspection), and service history book. Our general buying checklist applies here too.

How much does a second-hand MP3 cost in 2026?

As a guide, depending on the year, version, and condition: a MP3 400 from 2016-2019 in good condition ranges from approximately €4,000-€5,500, and an MP3 500 from those years between €5,500-€7,500.
