How much does it cost to maintain a motorcycle annually in Spain (2026)

The price of the motorcycle is just the beginning. Before buying, it's wise to know how much it will cost you to own it each year, because between insurance, taxes, ITV, and maintenance, expenses accumulate that are not always taken into account. We break it down for you with real figures for 2026 so there are no surprises.
Insurance
This is the most variable fixed cost, as it depends on the motorcycle, your age, and your history. As a reference:
- Basic third-party insurance: between €100 and €300 per year.
- Extended third-party or fully comprehensive insurance: from €150 up to €400 or more for large motorcycles.
For a first motorcycle or a 125cc, third-party insurance is usually sufficient. We explain the coverages on our motorcycle insurance page.
ITV
Motorcycles undergo their first ITV (Spanish vehicle inspection) after 4 years and, thereafter, every 2 years. The average cost ranges from €20 to €35 per inspection depending on the autonomous community. Spread annually, it is the smallest expense of all.
Road Tax (IVTM)
This is the municipal tax paid annually. For motorcycles, it is moderate: between €20 and €60 annually on average, depending on the engine capacity and the local council. Many municipalities apply lower rates to motorcycles than to cars.
Maintenance
Oil, filters, brake pads, tyres, and periodic services. For normal use, estimate between €150 and €300 per year. This depends heavily on the type of motorcycle: an urban 125cc costs little, whereas a sports bike or a large motorcycle, with more expensive tyres and consumables, significantly increases the cost. Buying a well-serviced motorcycle saves you from unpleasant surprises and unexpected bills.
Fuel
Here, the motorcycle easily beats the car. An urban 125cc is around €300–€400 per year; a larger motorcycle can double that figure, though it remains very efficient compared to four wheels.
What's the Total Cost?
For an urban 125cc motorcycle, the total cost of ownership usually falls between €600 and €700 per year, all-inclusive: insurance, taxes, prorated ITV, maintenance, and fuel. For a motorcycle with a larger engine capacity, expect that figure to increase, especially due to insurance and consumables.
| Item | Approx. Annual Cost (125cc) |
|---|---|
| Insurance (third-party) | 100 € – 300 € |
| ITV (prorated) | 10 € – 18 € |
| Road Tax | 20 € – 60 € |
| Maintenance | 150 € – 300 € |
| Fuel | 300 € – 400 € |
| Estimated Total | 600 € – 700 € |
How to Spend Less
- Choose the engine capacity wisely. A 125cc costs much less to maintain than a large motorcycle. Match it to your actual use.
- Don't skip services. Preventive maintenance is always cheaper than a breakdown.
- Buy a motorcycle that has already been serviced. Starting with a motorcycle in good condition avoids expenses in the first year.
